A magical and evocative atmosphere
In Coldrerio, a village located a short distance from Mendrisio, the representation of Jesus' ascent to Calvary and his Crucifixion has been proposed on Holy Wednesday for more than seventy-five years now. On the hill of Ciossetto, in a tragic and intense atmosphere, the Passion of Jesus is re-enacted - through the succession of different scenes - until its epilogue.
PARADE WITH PRESENTATION OF THE PERSONAGES
Escorted by young torch bearers and a few horses, more than 150 costumed characters parade from the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel to the village center, where they are presented to the public by Coldrerio's parish priest, Don Paolo Miara. The short portraits allow the protagonists of the event to be framed from a historical profile.
SCENIC REPRESENTATION
The events of the Passion with the various dramatic scenes take place against the natural backdrop of Ciossetto Hill: it all begins with the plot, hatched by the leaders of the Sanhedrin, against Jesus, who is captured in the Garden of Gethsemane and made to appear before the high priests Annas and Caiaphas, creating havoc among the apostles, especially in Peter who will deny him and in the traitor Judas Iscariot. Later Jesus is brought before the procurator of the Romans, Pontius Pilate, who will condemn him after flogging and sending him to Herod, an entirely unprecedented encounter because it is not in the Gospels but reconstructed from apocryphal versions. The ascent to Calvary finally preludes the crucifixion scene.
